Falling Out Of Love

I started making this EP at the start of the year because I had album(s) fatigue. I made “Novelty” just after Christmas and loved the vibe and wanted to keep it going. I’ve always wanted to make a Lofi project so I thought this was the best place to start.

I was looking through thousands of Lofi beats and tasked myself to write to the ones I liked the most. What started as a writing exercise ended up turning into something I’m extremely proud of which is rare for me. I haven’t opened up as much as I have in these 5 songs and I feel like they are a true representation of how I feel NOW. Albums can take years to make so when you finally release it, it feels like people are getting an old version of you.

As I said before, I found many of the beats on Youtube and I tried to purchase leases for them but they’re on labels and the artists probably didn’t intend to make them for someone rap on.

I hope you enjoy the EP. I’m very proud of it.

Rap Academics by Solareye

Taking the lyrics, ‘Kids rock Akademiks but they’re not academic’, from Jehst’s England, (2011) as a jump-off, this song is a ra/p/aper, demonstrating and arguing that hip-hop practice is hip-hop studies. Aiming to build on AD Carson’s artist-research in the form of mixtap/e/ssays (Carson, 2020), the track asserts that rap is research, art is scholarship, rather than research being a process that has to happen after creative practice. Through this process, issues are raised and explored regarding cultural legitimacy, hip-hop culture vs academic culture, and access to cultural spaces, through the creative output itself.

Artist Spotlight: Exxxhumed

 

David McNeill (born March 8, 1993), known professionally as EXXXHUMED, is a Scottish rapper, songwriter, and producer. EXXXHUMED has, as well as Scottish heritage, Irish and Spanish ancestry in his blood. He was raised by his stepfather, Paul McNeill, and his mother, Christine, both in and around Glasgow where he grew up with early music influences from the likes of Michael Jackson, Slipknot, The Cure, Johnny Cash, Tupac and Deftones. 

 These early influences gave David a taste for emotionally honest and sincere music, this would lead him into further musical influences from heavy metal, hardcore punk and alternative hip-hop/grime, as a true melting pot of music drove him to spark his own musical career.

 After floating in and out of metal bands as a teenager (2009-2012) and dabbling in Dark Ambient, Electronica and Dubstep in early 2010, David had finally found a foothold in a dark hip-hop style that was drenched in brutal honesty and sincerity under the stage name EXXXHUMED in early 2018.
