Artist Spotlight: Exxxhumed

 

David McNeill (born March 8, 1993), known professionally as EXXXHUMED, is a Scottish rapper, songwriter, and producer. EXXXHUMED has, as well as Scottish heritage, Irish and Spanish ancestry in his blood. He was raised by his stepfather, Paul McNeill, and his mother, Christine, both in and around Glasgow where he grew up with early music influences from the likes of Michael Jackson, Slipknot, The Cure, Johnny Cash, Tupac and Deftones. 

 These early influences gave David a taste for emotionally honest and sincere music, this would lead him into further musical influences from heavy metal, hardcore punk and alternative hip-hop/grime, as a true melting pot of music drove him to spark his own musical career.

 After floating in and out of metal bands as a teenager (2009-2012) and dabbling in Dark Ambient, Electronica and Dubstep in early 2010, David had finally found a foothold in a dark hip-hop style that was drenched in brutal honesty and sincerity under the stage name EXXXHUMED in early 2018.

"25/26" is the new single from rising Scottish talents McRoy and Vagrant Real Estate. McRoy reflects on life in the harsh reality of poverty in Scotland, struggling to get by and stay on the right side of the law. Melancholy production from Vagrant Real Estate underscores McRoy's bars illustrating paranoia and desperation, effortlessly switching rhyme schemes and flows as he talks frankly about the catch 22s of drug addiction, crime and hustling to get by.

McRoy is a Scottish rapper who across a handful of releases and freestyles has amassed a cult following in his home country, widely recognized by fans and peers alike as one of the best in his scene. Through unflinching tracks like "Hardman Talk" and "Outlaw", McRoy has gained hundreds of thousands of streams across platforms with little to no mainstream support or radio play, where fans have instantly connected with his effortless flow and intricate rhyme schemes. Most recently he was featured on DJ Prospect's Scotland Cypher on GRMDaily alongside the heavyweights of the scene including Ransom FA, Shogun and Oakzy B, cementing his status among the top of his game, and also supported RA The Rugged Man at his recent Glasgow tour date.

Vagrant Real Estate is an Aberdeen based producer, and has received notable coverage from the likes of Ministry of Sound, DJ Mag and i-D Magazine. He was also named as one of Vic Galloway’s (BBC Radio Scotland) Top 25 Artists To Watch in 2021, and comes off the back of producing for Edinburgh dark pop act Misty Galactic, highlighting his versatility and depth as a producer. His last full length instrumental album "SWEETHEARTGRIPS" saw wide ranging support from BBC Radio Jazz Nights, Wordplay, UKHH and front page coverage on Aberdeen's The Press And Journal newspaper.

Conscious Route is a rapper, MC, poet and singer-songwriter who was born in London before moving to Edinburgh over a decade ago. 

 

In 2020 he unleashed the collaborative - ‘Lost Routes’ album, alongside producer True Note - The album received a 4-star review in The Scotsman and picked out for a ‘track of the week' on BBC Introducing Scotland. In addition to this - his last two releases ‘Trojan’ and his feature on ‘Dragons Jaw’ by ‘Post Coal Prom Queen’ were named track of the week on BBC Introducing Scotland and his Sensory EP from August was a collaboration with producer Toni Smoke – which saw 2 tracks receive worldwide airplay on Rapstation 365 – Radio station of legendary Chuck D.

 

Protest EP is a thundering blend of contemporary sounds and old-school execution showcasing Conscious Route’s diversity and versatility as an artist and a willingness to embrace more cutting-edge production styles while not compromising his individuality or past credentials. The EP is produced by fellow Edinburgh-based beat-maker - Crink and cuts by iconic UK turntablist, DJ JabbaThaKut on the track ‘C4’.

 

 

 Never one to conform to industry trends or expectations – Protest EP is another heavy addition to Conscious Route’s diverse and progressive back catalogue which he looks to continue to add to through 2021 and beyond…

'Used To' by Who Cried Wolf?

Who Cried Wolf? is a Scottish alternative rap/rock duo made up of lead vocalist Deezy, who has dabbled in various genres, most recently writing on a house track for Idris Elba's 7Wallace record label. The other member of the duo is producer RJ Cherry who has also worked across multiple genres gaining production credits with platinum selling recording artists and global brands. This song was created after lead vocalist Deezy found out that a close relative was terminally ill, being creative during this time acted as some form of coping mechanism. “Used To” is about realising life is short and regretting squandering missed opportunities and is the first of many the duo has recorded together.

Who Cried Wolf? has been collaborating on and off for the past decade under various aliases after bonding initially over a mutual love of American rap groups such as Mobb Deep and Dipset. But the Who Cried Wolf? project albeit still having a strong hiphop influence, was influenced just as much by the polar opposite end of the musical scale such as guilty pleasure guitar pop and forgotten 80s & 90s one hit wonders, in particular music that sounds upbeat but often has a dark meaning to the lyrics. "Happy sad sh*t” as Deezy puts it

While we would love to focus on posting great new music from Scotland, an important fundraiser has been set-up I need to share. Please read the below and donate anything you can to help save the music and the happiness of a true Scottish Hip-Hop pioneer.

'Del has been an avid Hip Hop fan for many many years and has an encyclopedic knowledge of the subject and often shared his collection to his followers on twitter (@delsoulcondor).

Recently it has become known after diagnosis he has evasive mouth cancer and obviously a huge shock to him, his family and the community. Typically, some thoughts turned to Del's epic Vinyl collection and he expressed concern that he never wanted it to 'end up in charity shops or a skip', wanting them to go to a good Home'.
